She was born July 30, 1931 in Frankfort, IN.  She was the daughter of Murry L. and Elizabeth L. Liston.  She married Gene Owen Smith on April 15, 1949 in Anderson, IN.
Norma’s interests and involvements included PTA, Cub Scouts, 4-H, Vermillion County Hospital Guild-and Volunteer, Covered Bridge Square’s Square Dance Club, and the Community Action Program, to mention just a few.  She loved Parke County and her “little corner of the world”, as she always referred to it.  She was a lover of history and the preservation of Parke County, especially her beloved covered bridges.  She was a great believer in civic duty and served on the Parke County Election Board for decades.  She instilled in her children, the importance and duty to vote in every election.  She was also a long-time member of the Mecca Wesleyan Church.
She was an artist, avid flower enthusiast, and loved fishing and boating.  Her love of music was a big part of her life, as well as ballroom dancing and square dancing.
Paramount in her life, was the love she showed her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.  Norma Jean was indeed a sweet spirit and loved by many.  She is now dancing in heaven with her beloved Gene Owen!
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Gene; her parents; brother, Jerry Liston; and her son-in-law, Gregory L. Hartman.
She is survived by three children, Jeanne Smith of Armiesburg, Cindy Smith-Hartman of Terre Haute, and Randy (Faye) Smith of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Heather (Tony) Sedletzeck of Terre Haute, John (Dana) Hartman of Fishers, Paul Smith, Derik (April) Smith, and Victoria (Michael) FitzSimons, all of Georgia; six great-grandchildren, Benjamin Sedletzeck, Andrew Sedletzeck, Aaron Smith, Tylor Smith, Payton Smith, and Reese Marie Hartman; siblings, Joan (Edgar) Thomas of Rochester, IN, Ronald (Carole) Liston of Chesapeake, VA, Jack (Che) Liston of Mesa, AZ, Sheila (Donnie) Lear of Richmond, IN, and Terry Liston of Richmond, IN; as well as several loved nieces and nephews.
