Mary Elizabeth Mitchell Sherrill, 102, of Montezuma passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Vermillion Convalescent Center in Clinton.
She was born in Parke County Indiana on August 19, 1923, to Frederick Able Mitchell and Ida Ellen (Haun) Mitchell. Both preceded Mary in death, along with her husband, Freeman L. Sherrill Sr.
Mary worked as the school secretary at Montezuma for 22 years. She was a second mother to all the kids in the school and was beloved by everyone, teachers and children alike.
Mary also cared for her mother Ida for many years. After Mary and Freeman Sr were married, Ida came to live with them and remained a part of the Sherrill family for the rest of her life.
Mary was a member of the Montezuma Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #537 for 50 years and rolled crullers for their booth during the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival. She also sold persimmon ice cream with her son’s Boy Scout Troop during the early years of the festival.
Mary loved to crochet, sew and make ceramics. She was an excellent cook and was famous for her spaghetti sauce.
Surviving Mary are her children, Nancy L. Sherrill of Montezuma, IN., Freeman L. Sherrill Jr., of Port Saint Lucie, FL., and Pamela J. Sherrill of Wasilla, AK; grandson, Michael (Andito) Sherrill and great-granddaughter Josephine Sherrill, all of Arlington Heights, IL. She is also survived by her special friend Lisa Noffke of Montezuma.
Visitation will be at Brown-Mack Funeral Home on Monday March 2, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Service at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Keith McIntyre officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parke-Vermillion Humane Society in memory of Mary.
