Gene O. Smith, 88, of Armiesburg, IN, died at 7:01 pm on December 13th in Union Hospital Terre Haute.  He was born November 9, 1927 in rural Montezuma to Paul Mathis Smith and Esta Mae Wilson Smith.
He was a US Navy Veteran, serving in the Korean War.  On April 15, 1949, he married his wife Norma Jean Liston Smith in Anderson, IN.  He was a charter member of the Operating Engineers Local #841.  He was a former owner of the Tippecanoe Pavers and Gene O. Smith Excavating.  He retired in 1992 with over 60 plus years in the #841.  He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Rockville American Legion, the Am Vets, Parke Lodge # 8, the Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine, and was formerly the president of the Covered Bridge Square Dancing Club.  He was also the oldest member of the Montezuma Fish & Game Club.
He is survived by his wife of Armiesburg; two daughters, Jeanne Smith of Armiesburg, IN and Cindy L. Hartman of North Terre Haute; one son, Randy O. and Faye Smith of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Heather and Tony Sedletzeck, John D. and Dana Hartman, Paul O. Smith, Derik G. and April Smith, and Victoria L. Whitehead; and six great-grandchildren, Ben Sedletzeck, Andrew Sedletzeck, Aaron Smith, Tylor Smith, Payton Smith, and Reese Marie Hartman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brothers, Mark M. Smith; and one sister, Catharine Graves.
Visitation will be from 10-12 on Thursday with services to be held at noon at Brown-Mack Funeral Home with Masonic Services to begin at noon.  Funeral services to follow with Reverend Donna Hardesty officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery with military honors by Parke County Veteran’s Organizations.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mecca Wesleyan Church for missions.  Online condolences may be made at www.brownmackfuneralhome.com.
