Dennis Max Bartlow 66 of Danville, IL., passed away on May 21, 2013 at 10:30am in his residence. He was born on Jan 5, 1947 in Clinton to Max and Maxine Bartlow. He graduated from Montezuma High School and Indiana State University in 1970 with a major in journalism and a minor in Latin. He spent 3 summers as an intern at the Commercial-News. Upon graduation, he had to choose between a career as a teacher or journalist. He chose journalist after the Commercial-News created a job for him as assitant state editor and he stayed 40 years retiring in 2010. During those four decades, Bartlow worked in a variety of jobs as editor and reporter, covering sports and regular news. He also coordinated the Wabash Valley News, a special section for Indiana readers for 20 years. After retirement, he continued to work as a correspondent for the paper covering Indiana news. He enjoyed writing about elections for the newspaper and was always interested in politics. He was proud of an autograph from Richard Nixon (before he was president), who appeared at a 1965 rally for John Myers, then candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives.
He was active at First Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir, was a session member, served on the Committee on Ministry for the Presbytery, was chairman of the Communication Ministry Team and board member for Camp Carew. He also was Presbytery commissioner, liturgist, worship leader, Chimes editor, newsletter and photographer for the Presbytery of South Eastern Illiois, former chair of Worship Ministry Team and also changed the outdoors church message board (in all kinds of weather).
He had a strong proponent of teaching Latin in schools and was an active member of the National Junior Classical League, an organization for students of Latin, on both the state and national levels. He had served 20 years on the national committee and for even longer as the Indiana JCL co-chair. In 2011, he was honored for attending his 50th national NJCL convention. He was also interested in sports and was an avid Cubs and ISU Sycamores fan. He enjoyed traveling and had friends across the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Edwin.
Survivng is a sister in law, Jennifer & Greg McKaufsky of Rantoul, a niece Courtney & Brian Hostetler of Chippewa Falls, WI., and a nephew Chris Bartlow of Westfield IN.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 10am - Noon (Indiana time) at the Montezuma Presbyterian Church, with services to be at Noon. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Frist Presbyterian Church, 100 N Franklin St, Danville, IL 61832
